What is a Drug Treatment Center?

A drug treatment center offers a safe place for a person to undergo a treatment program.  Drug rehabilitation is an important part of a treatment program that takes place in the drug treatment center.  Drug rehabilitation is an important part of any treatment program allowing the addict to go through detoxification, receive one-on-one psychological help, and learn new skills such as relapse prevention and coping skills.  There are a variety of treatment centers that a person who is addicted to drugs can enroll in.  Some treatment centers are located in hospitals, while others are a part of a clinic.  The location and type of the center is dependent upon the treatment that will be provided. Some examples of these treatments are listed below:

• Inpatient Treatment

Inpatient treatment is provided in special units of hospitals or clinics that offers both detox and rehabilitation services.  People who suffer from mental issues surrounding the use of substances are likely to receive assessments and help here.

• Residential Programs

Residential programs provide a living environment that includes treatment services and support.  These programs can last from a month to a year or more.  They are very comprehensive programs allowing for treatment but also time to improve skills, like job searching, educational classes, and parenting classes.

• Day Treatment

These programs usually last for three months or more.  They have been proven to work best for individuals who have a stable, supportive home environment in which the treatment can take place while the individual still stays at home.

• Outpatient/Intensive Outpatient Programs

These programs provide treatment at a program site.  Many meet in the evening or on weekends.  Intensive programs require a person to attend 9 to 20 hours per week.  People do best in these programs when they are willing to attend counseling sessions, have supportive loved ones, and a place to live and easy transportation.
