Defining Traits of This EraDrugs and rehabilitation have become the defining traits of this era, and the problem is not specific to one country, race, age group, or status. Drugs, drug abuse, and drug addiction are terms we hear almost daily, and this could be due to the fact that activities surrounding drug abuse have increased dramatically over the years. The prevalence of drug abuse appears to increase in relation to more powerful chemicals in drugs, more accessibility to drugs, and the constant exposure to movies, songs, commercials and books that are dedicated to presenting drug use as enjoyable, glamorous, acceptable or even humorous.
As a result of this increased drug abuse, the term “drug rehabilitation” has become another phrase we hear repeatedly. Ironically, in an era of individuals that are more educated about drugs than ever before, we are confronted with an epidemic of drug abusers and the need for rehabilitation. Drugs and rehabilitation will cost taxpayers and the government enormous amounts of money due to the increasing numbers of individuals who need treatment and cannot pay for it themselves. More costs are incurred when government sponsored legal aid is needed for those who have become involved in drug related crime and residual effects of drug abuse will continue to affect society in many ways for years to come unless we devise more effective methods for awareness and prevention.
An ideal future society will be one that is not inundated with the negative consequences imposed by those who are fixated on drug use, and hopefully, terms like drugs and rehabilitation will be mentioned only when discussing the past. Until then, we must do everything possible to help those who are addicted to drugs. If you are one of those individuals, please make the decision today to become drug-free and take the steps necessary to get on the path to recovery.
